History: Yu Yu Hakusho Wiki LinkPersonality: Kazuma Kuwabara is a textbook example of “don’t judge a book by its cover.” On the surface, Kuwabara is just another punk kid, with his greased up pompadour, bad attitude, hot temper, and penchant for fighting, but once you start peeling back the layers, it’s easy to see why he is considered the heart of the show.
That is not to say that he doesn’t enjoy being a delinquent. He proudly declares himself Sarayashiki Junior High School’s second worst punk, and he’s made it his goal to dethrone Yusuke Urameshi for the top position. He makes sure to dress the part as well, by binding his abs with bandages like a brawler, and donning a Bōsōzoku coat for important fights.
It all starts with his Code. Kuwabara likes fighting, but he’s not the kind of guy who fights dirty or believes in using any method at his disposal to get ahead. He believes very strongly in fair fights and honor, and he refuses to do anything that may fall outside of those realms.
While this means his intentions are generally noble, this can become a great weakness when he comes up against people who would take advantage of him. For example, in one match of the Dark Tournament, Kuwabara has a prophetic dream indicating that Team Urameshi’s next opponents were being controlled, and he refused to fight them when this proved to be true. The decision was nearly a fatal one, but Genkai, then disguised as the Masked Fighter, was able to purge the mind control with the use of her Spirit Wave technique.
He also very willingly gave his life so that Yusuke would be able to win the Dark Tournament - or at least, he made the attempt. In an unexpected turn of events, their opponent, Toguro, only made it
look like he killed Kuwabara. But Kuwabara didn’t know that at the start, and he was very willing to die if it meant saving the world from demons.
This also shows that while Kuwabara isn’t willing to use dirty tricks in a fight, he’s more than willing to pull horrible pranks on his friends (mostly meaning Yusuke). In addition to faking his death so that Yusuke would have proper motivation to fight, after the defeat of the Four Saint Beasts, he convinces Kurama to look grim when a formerly unconscious Yusuke asks about Keiko, his (not) girlfriend’s health. They pull it off, right until Keiko walks into the room with tea.
Despite his willingness to trick, trash talk, and fight with his friends, they are extremely precious to him, and even a source of power for him. Having Yukina, his love interest, show up during the fight with Risho gave him the strength and determination he needed to win, and during his fight against Kiyoshi Mitarai (aka Sea Man), when faced with the possible death of his friends, Kuwabara awakens sleeping powers and he gains the power to slice through dimensional barriers with a new type of energy sword called the Jigen Tou, or Dimensional Blade.
This willingness to sacrifice and fight for his friends is not the only thing that changes Mitarai’s mind about the inherent nature of humanity, and encourages him to join Team Urameshi to fight against Sensui. Mitarai is originally cruel and ruthless in his attack against Kuwabara, threatening to drown his friends and goading him to leave them behind. When Kuwabara finally activates the Dimensional Blade and defeats him, instead of killing him or leaving him to die, Kuwabara carries him and his friends back to Yusuke’s apartment. “When men do what they’re supposed to do, it’s not always about what they want.”
Abilities:- High Spirit Awareness: As described by Genkai during the Chapter Black saga, Kuwabara's Spirit Awareness is unparalleled. During the early part of the series, Kuwabara is stated as being able to hear and feel the presence of ghosts, but are only able to see them when asleep. As the series progresses, the usage and amount of his spiritual abilities and energy becomes stronger, enabling him to form increasingly powerful spiritual "swords" to fight his enemies. As the moral core of the team, he is more prone than Yusuke to become stronger when his friends and innocents are present or in danger, as those he cared about played a role in his victory over Risho. His high sixth sense rarely plays a role in his battles, though he has used it to avoid foes and sense danger.
- Telepathy: The ability to mentally project his thoughts. Kuwabara was shown to be able communicate via this method twice in episode 24, "The Deadly Triad", to notify Yukina of his presence, and in the Dark Tournament Saga to say farewell to his friends when he tried to attempt a last-resort suicidal attack on Risho.
- Precognition: Later on in the series, it is shown that Kuwabara is able to see visions of future events and of events surrounding circumstances, such as when he had a prophetic dream revolving around the members of the Ichigaki team during the Dark Tournament.
- Superhuman Physical Strength & Endurance: Many times throughout the series he is shown to take the most brutal beatings out of all the main characters, yet continues to get up and fight on many occasions, such as with his fights with Byakko in the Demon World or his Dark Tournament battle with Rinku, where he left his opponent literally frightened at the sight of him standing. Kuwabara was able to withstand a kick from Rinku, which according to the latter was strong enough to break a person's neck.
- Spirit Kick: Like Yusuke, he can surround his foot with spirit energy to strengthen his kicks to knock out opponents.
- Spirit Transfusion: Kuwabara is skilled at manipulating his spirit energy. After Yusuke defeats Suzaku at the end of the Four Saint Beasts arc, Kuwabara transfers some of his spirit energy into his badly beaten friend's body so that he doesn't die, being able to transfer such a large amount that Kuwabara was knocked out as well. He also exhibits the ability to reabsorb small amounts of spirit energy released in maintaining his Spirit Sword after his battle with Byakko.
- Spirit Sword: This is Kuwabara's signature attack, where he creates a sword comprised only of his Spirit Energy. Its strength depends on how much energy Kuwabara focuses into it, and it has been known to break if Kuwabara holds back too much (such as during the anime-only battle against Gokumonki, where he was afraid he'd hit Botan who was being held hostage if he used too much power). Since Kuwabara is not trained as a swordsman, he lacks the grace of Hiei's sword strikes, and swings rather clumsily.
- Energy Deflection: He can use the sword to repel energy-based techniques by swinging it like a baseball bat.
- Spirit Sword Javelin/Spirit Sword, Get Long!: After learning to control his Spirit Sword, at first Kuwabara is only capable of just lengthening his sword. After training with Kurama in preparation for the Dark Tournament, Kuwabara is now able to both bend and lengthen his sword at will (making it similar to a whip-sword or johyo). This attack enables him to attack his opponent from a distance (as seen in his fight with Rinku), and also act as a javelin or a pole vault in order to both leap great distances or survive falls from great heights (as seen in his fight with Byakko).
- Double Spirit Sword: During his training before the Dark Tournament under Kurama and Hiei, Kuwabara develops the ability to materialize two swords at once, one for each hand.
- Spirit Sword Shards: This is a technique where Kuwabara produces small bolts of energy from his hands, similar to shuriken, and shoots the smaller spirit blades at the opponent. This can be considered Kuwabara's analogue of the Spirit Shotgun, since it is a multiple projectile attack, and weaker than the Spirit Sword.
- Dimension Sword: An enhanced version of Kuwabara's Spirit Sword that enables him to literally cut through dimensional barriers and psychic territory. An immense energy is concentrated into his spirit sword, improving its strength tremendously. This sword's visual shape is completely streamlined (perhaps to emphasize its perfection level), unlike the jagged appearances sported by the previous forms. Initially, he had trouble summoning it and it would only appear in dire situations, but he eventually could summon it at will. This is a very rare ability that Sensui was looking for during the Chapter Black saga. Kuwabara first acquired this ability during his battle with Seaman, but wasn't able to manifest it at will until his final battle against Sensui. The Dimension Sword is also hinted at being the ultimate offensive power; as it can cleave space, it can theoretically cut through anything. This is supported by the fact that, while Sensui had no problems receiving any of Hiei's or Kurama's attacks, he actively had to avoid any attacks from Kuwabara's Dimension Sword.
Strengths: Loyal, Strong, Honorable, Kind, Optimistic
Weaknesses: Honorable, Stubborn, Reckless, Rude, Impulsive
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Because I want Kurama to suffer. Plus, he's the weakest member of Team Urameshi, and prone to getting his ass-kicked, kidnapped, and otherwise just winds up with the short end of the stick. Dying horribly is just sort of... expected of him, in a way.
Cause Of Death: Instead of simply having Gourmet fight Team Urameshi right away, Sensui orders him to eat Kuwabara first, then attack.
Vessel: The Fighting Headband of Love, Baby!
Name Location: Juki with a character for tree! 樹 - On his left pec.
Power: Stat boost: The wearer is imbued with strength, confidence, passion, determination, vim and vigor! Nothing can stop them from completing their goal! The only drawback is that it can make them so focused on achieving victory that they become blinded to anything else.
Writing SampleSample: “Gotta be honest, the weirdest part about all this being dead business is the other ghosts,” Kuwabara said, leaning against the couch with his arms draped across the back, his head tilted back until he was looking up at the ceiling. “It’s not so much that they’re there, that doesn’t bother me none, but it’s the fact that somehow, they’re different from us.”
“Like, I guess we’re made the same way? Through violent or sudden deaths and all that, but we got all these special powers, and gods, and they’re just kinda… there. Not doing much.”
“Or am I the only one who can see them? It don’t seem like nobody else pays them much attention, and that kinda sucks, cuz there was this really cute girl with blue hair the other day!” He drops his head to flash a wide grin, a dusting of pink on his cheeks, but then his expression sobers and softens. “I almost went to talk to her, but I got that feeling, yanno the one, cuz I was thinking, kinda like I’m doing now…”
That feeling of an unpleasant tickle running down the back of his neck, a warning not to take another step on this train of thought. He shuddered slightly, cringing at the feeling, but covered it up with a loud laugh, rubbing one hand against the back of his neck.
“But hey, enough about that, right? I’m hungry, are you hungry? I could really go for some pizza!”
OtherAnything Else?: If at all possible, I'd like him to go to Kurama, please and thank you!
